Située à 1 957 m d'altitude, la commune a été créée le 1er janvier 2014 à la suite de la fusion des anciennes communes de Betten et de Martisberg.
Station de sports d'hiver, la station est, en été, le départ de nombreuses randonnées, notamment pour le glacier d'Aletsch, depuis le Bettmerhorn ou l'Eggishorn ainsi que pour la réserve naturelle de l'Unesco.
