Hambourg est une ville et une métropole en Allemagne. C'est la deuxième plus grande ville du pays et également le principal port : le fleuve Elbe relie Hambourg à la mer du Nord. La ville ne fait pas partie d'un Land, mais en constitue un elle-même. À l'intérieur des limites officielles, qui englobent environ 755 km², vivent des habitants. Dans les zones urbaines adjacentes, il y a encore 750 000 habitants. Dans la région métropolitaine de Hambourg, cinq millions de personnes vivent sur plus de 26 000 km².
Hambourg connaît diverses formes d'industrie, et dispose d'un métro et d'aéroports. Le tunnel de l'Elbe ancien était le premier tunnel sous-fluvial de l'Europe. Il existe diverses institutions scientifiques, dont une université, deux instituts Max-Planck et DESY. La plupart des bâtiments historiques ont été détruits pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale lors du bombardement de Hambourg.
