Situé au fond de l'estuaire de l'Elbe, à 144 kilomètres de la mer du Nord, au nord-est du northern range , le port de Hambourg est notamment spécialisé dans le trafic conteneurs, domaine dans lequel il n'est surpassé en Europe que par le port de Rotterdam.
