Le château de Malmaison est situé dans la commune de Rueil-Malmaison dans le département des Hauts-de-Seine et la région Île-de-France .
L'origine du nom « Malmaison » est mal connue. Malmaison, de mala domus , signifie « mauvaise maison ». On avance en général l'hypothèse de la mauvaise fréquentation des lieux au Moyen Âge mais aussi que ce nom serait dû à l’activité première de la ville qui était la prise en charge de personnes malades.
