Situé entre Vivières et Villers-Cotterêts, au croisement de la route qui mène à l'observatoire du général Mangin, ce monument a été érigé par la mère du sous-lieutenant Georges Edward Cecil en l'honneur de son fils âgé de 18 ans et de ses camarades anglais et irlandais tombés en cet endroit le 1er septembre 1914. Cette sculpture, inspirée d’une stèle du musée de l’Acropole : "Athéna appuyée sur sa lance", représente une mère recueillie sur une tombe militaire.
Georges Edward Cecil est enterré dans le "Guards grave", qui se trouve deux cent mètres plus loin.
