Vincent van Gogh a marché du Borinage belge à Courrières, qui abritait alors l'artiste-poète Jules Breton. Van Gogh admirait Breton en tant que peintre.
Il a fait la promenade pendant le rude hiver de 1878-1880, auquel il a survécu de justesse dans le froid glacial. Mais là, il a vu la lumière. « Je vais reprendre mon crayon, que j'ai jeté avec un grand découragement, et recommencer à dessiner », écrit-il à son frère Théo, après son retour à Cuesmes.
