Mersch est le centre (prosper) de la région agricole au Luxembourg. La Mamer et l'Eisch, deux rivières, s'y jettent dans l'Alzette. Que ce soit une région riche est clairement montré par la densité des châteaux : Mersch en possède un datant du douzième siècle. Au sud-ouest de Mersch, on en trouve pas moins de sept ; on parle donc à juste titre de la Vallée des Sept Châteaux. Au nord de Mersch se trouve Colmar-Berg, qui est entièrement dominé par l'impressionnant château des grands-ducs. À Pettingen, au nord de Mersch, se dresse un château du XIIIe siècle. Près de Schoenfels, situé plus au sud, se trouve un château avec un donjon du XVIe siècle.
