Le bâtiment appartenait au départ à l'entrepreneur de transport de voyageurs Auguste Wirtgen. Après sa mort, l'immeuble est passé sous la propriété de la commune en 1889, où il a servi de mairie jusqu'en 1959. En plus de l'administration et de la galerie municipale d'art de Diekirch, il abrite aujourd'hui, entre autres, des classes de la branche diekirchoise de l'École de musique Conservatoire de Musique du Nord.
