L'église a été fondée au 13ème siècle. Les trois parties inférieures du clocher sont en pierre de tuf. Au 13ème siècle, le clocher a été surélevé et l'église est devenue une église à trois nefs avec des fenêtres en ogive étroites. Au 14ème siècle, l'église romano-gothique a été agrandie pour devenir une église croisée. Les transepts sont plus grands qu'une des travées. La nef centrale a des voûtes en dôme. Au plafond, il y a des fresques murales. L'orgue de 1788 a été fabriqué par Lambertus van Dam. Dans le clocher de l'église, se trouve une cloche qui a été fondue en 1662 par Jurrien Balthasar. Sur la cloche apparaît notamment le blason d'Aernt van Hillama, membre d'une famille noble qui habitait alors le château de Hillama.
