La première bataille de Dalton, se déroula du 22 février au 27 février 1864, dans le comté de Whitfield, durant la guerre de Sécession. Le 22 février, George H. Thomas décida de reconnaître les troupes de Joseph E. Johnston, pour déterminer si la perte de deux divisions pour renforcer les forces confédérées ailleurs, les rendaient vulnérables à l'attaque. Après plusieurs jours d'escarmouches intenses, l'armée de Thomas se retira en réalisant que Johnston pourrait repousser n'importe quel assaut.
