La communauté Rodef Shalom de Pittsburgh existe depuis 1847. La synagogue actuelle, située à l'intersection de Morewood Avenue et de la Fifth Avenue, à la limite des quartiers Oakland et Shadyside, a été dédiée en 1907. C'est la troisième synagogue construite par la communauté afin de faire face à la croissance importante du nombre de ses membres.
La communauté Rodef Shalom est la plus ancienne communauté juive de la Pennsylvanie orientale, et la plus importante communauté réformée de la région.
