Il castello di Rif si trova nel comune catastale di Taxach nella città di Hallein, nel distretto di Hallein, nel Land di Salisburgo. È sotto protezione dei monumenti. Nel 1125 appare in un documento del conte Berengar di Sulzbach il nome di un Fridericus de Rifaren, che potrebbe essere localizzato a Rif. In un documento emesso dall'imperatore Federico II è contenuto il nome Riue, che è derivato dal latino ripa; la corrispondente proprietà era di proprietà del capitolo della cattedrale di Salisburgo.
