Il castello del primo conte di Arlon, Waléran, fu eretto sulla collina nell'XI secolo e poi distrutto nel 1558 insieme alle mura della città dalle truppe del Duca di Guise. Quando i Padri Cappuccini si stabilirono ad Arlon nel 1621, fecero costruire il loro convento sulle rovine del castello. Nel 1681 fu eretta una cinta bastionata di tipo "Vauban", trasformando il convento in cittadella. Vittima di un fulmine nel 1719, la chiesa fu dedicata a Sant'Onofrio. Il vecchio convento dei Cappuccini fu definitivamente soppresso nel 1796. Solo la chiesa è rimasta e fu ristrutturata nel XX secolo.
