Oudenburg fa parte delle città più antiche del nostro paese. I Romani vi costruirono già nel quarto secolo un castellum come difesa contro i pirati sassoni invasori. All'epoca la linea costiera irregolare si trovava ancora al confine della futura città. La struttura quadrata di questa fortezza è ancora chiaramente visibile nel nucleo attuale del villaggio. Anche durante il Medioevo Oudenburg svolse un ruolo non trascurabile in Fiandre. In questo contesto menzioniamo la fondazione, attorno al 1084, dell'abbazia di San Pietro. Nel campo dell'industria della lana, Oudenburg apparteneva agli insediamenti principali delle Fiandre. È una città con un passato secolare, di cui ricordano ancora numerosi monumenti.
