In questo posto puoi vedere perché Klerken fosse importante e perché fosse fondamentale avere una vista. Chi non aveva una buona altezza doveva ottenere le sue informazioni geografiche da palloni vulnerabili o dalle fughe dei piloti. E una base di osservazione permanente come questa era sicuramente più comoda.
Klerken fu occupata dalla Germania per tutta la guerra, era una città di approvvigionamento e un nodo di rifornimento per il fronte. Costruirono anche una torre di osservazione. Nell'ottobre del 1914 la popolazione fuggì in gran parte altrove. Solo il parroco Denys e le suore del convento rimasero in città e accoglievano rifugiati nel “gestito” dove orfani, disabili, malati e rifugiati si trovavano insieme. Denys teneva un diario.
