Il ducato di Limburgo fu fondato nel 1839 come sostituzione - e molto parziale continuazione - del ducato storico di Limburgo, che era esistito fino al 1795. Comprendeva il territorio dell'attuale provincia olandese di Limburgo.
Guglielmo I dei Paesi Bassi accettò un trattato di pace con il ribelle Belgio a condizione di riottenere le parti orientali delle province di Limburgo e Lussemburgo. Queste province si erano unite alla Rivoluzione belga e dal 1830 appartenevano di fatto al Belgio, ad eccezione delle fortezze di città di Lussemburgo e Maastricht, rimaste in possesso dell'esercito governativo olandese.
