Il re bavarese Massimiliano II, padre di Ludwig, acquistò la casa di caccia originale a metà del XIX secolo. Nei giardini si trovano vari edifici kitsch, come il Lago dei Cigni, la Grotta di Venere e la Casa marocchina, dove il re introverso poteva davvero dare sfogo alla sua indubbiamente ricca fantasia.
