È il capoluogo e il centro maggiore del circondario della Svizzera Sassone-Monti Metalliferi Orientali.
È nota anche per la gassificazione di circa 15.000 disabili avvenuta nel vicino castello di Sonnenstein tra il giugno 1940 e l'agosto 1941.
