Volkmarsen si trova in Assia settentrionale, circa 28 km a ovest-nordovest di Kassel, sul margine settentrionale della piana di Waldeck e sulla sua inclinazione verso la valle del Diemel. Il parco naturale Habichtswald si trova a est della città.
Volkmarsen è attraversata o sfiorata dal tributario del Diemel, il Twiste, a ovest, dove a sud-ovest della città principale sfociano il Watter e a nord il Wande e l'Erpe che scorre a est. Nove ruscelli attraversano il territorio del comune, prima che le loro acque siano convogliate nel Diemel tramite il Twiste. Un canale derivato dal Twiste come ulteriore protezione dalle mura cittadine è ancora oggi visibile nella parte occidentale della città vecchia come "Mühlengraben".
