Lo Zoo di Augusta è stato inaugurato il 12 giugno 1937 come parco della fauna tedesca. Nel periodo dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, l'ex "Giardino Zoologico di Augusta" è stato arricchito con animali esotici. Oggi, lo Zoo di Augusta è la struttura culturale più visitata della Svevia, con oltre 650.000 visitatori all'anno, ed è uno dei 20 zoo e giardini zoologici più grandi della Germania.
Lo zoo si trova nella zona urbana al margine settentrionale della Siebentischwald, un'area di ricreazione nelle vicinanze di Augusta, che serve anche come area di protezione delle acque per l'acqua potabile urbana. A ovest, il zoo confina con il parco paesaggistico Siebentischanlagen e a nord con il Giardino Botanico di Augusta. L'area totale dello zoo è di 22 ettari.
