Il bosco di Ziegelroda si estende per la maggior parte nel Sachsen-Anhalt, al confine con la Turingia, su un'area forestale di circa 8200 ettari. Si estende dalla città di Nebra sull'Unstrut a sud-est fino a Allstedt a nord-ovest. L'estensione massima in direzione nord-sud è di circa 18 km, mentre in direzione est-ovest è di 12 km. Il nome deriva dal villaggio situato in una grande radura nel centro del bosco. Dal 2004 Ziegelroda è una frazione di Querfurt. La maggior parte dell'area fa parte del parco naturale Saale-Unstrut-Triasland.
Il bosco si trova sul plateau di arenaria multicolore di Ziegelroda, che si unisce a ovest al piano di Querfurt. Dal punto di vista naturale, è assegnato alla regione montuosa e collinare dell'Unstrut inferiore.
