Il Museo delle Ferriere di Thale è stato fondato nel 1986 in occasione del 300° anniversario della fonderia di Thale. Dal 1° luglio 1998, il museo è gestito dall'Associazione Museo di Storia e Ferriera di Thale am Harz e.V. Mostra lo sviluppo della fusione e lavorazione del ferro attraverso l'esempio dello stabilimento di Thale, dalla fonderia di lamiere nel 1686 fino all'industria su larga scala del XX secolo.
Il museo si trova all'ingresso della Valle di Bode, a circa tre minuti dalla stazione centrale di Thale. Il museo è situato all'indirizzo Walter-Rathenau-Straße 1, nell'ex edificio residenziale del proprietario della ferriera Johann Carl Benninghausen, ed è stato ristrutturato nella sua forma attuale. A ovest dell'ingresso si trova la cappella della fonderia di Thale, utilizzata come galleria del museo.
