Watten si trova all'uscita del Kolme nell'Aa. Fino al 5° e 6° secolo, la valle dell'Aa era una vasta palude, sufficientemente stretta a livello del Watenberg per essere attraversata. In questo stretto si trovava l'avanguardia della via romana da Kassel a Boulogne, che ha dato il nome al luogo, vasières, da cui deriva Watten. Diederik d'Alsazia è sepolto nell'abbazia di Watten nel 1168.
La città stessa ha potuto preservare solo la torre della chiesa di San Gilles della sua lunga storia. Sulla cima della montagna che domina Waten si erge la vecchia torre di celebrazione in calcare della chiesa abbaziale, costruita nel 14° secolo. Su uno dei bastioni di terra del vecchio forte e di fronte a Waten si erge il Bergmolen, costruito nel 1731.
