Besançon è un comune francese di 115 934 abitanti, capoluogo del dipartimento del Doubs e fino al 2015 della regione della Franca Contea. Dal 2016 è sede del Consiglio Regionale della nuova regione Borgogna-Franca Contea .La sua cittadella venne progettata dall'architetto militare e maresciallo di Francia Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban e dal 2008 è parte del Patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
