Il Primo Impero fu instaurato in Francia da Napoleone Bonaparte per sostituire il Consolato. Ebbe inizio il 18 maggio 1804, quando un senatoconsulto proclamò Bonaparte Imperatore dei Francesi e terminò nell'aprile 1814 con l'abdicazione di Napoleone e l'esilio sull'isola d'Elba.
Il plebiscito del 6 novembre 1804 legittimò il passaggio al Primo Impero. Napoleone Bonaparte fu consacrato imperatore a Notre-Dame il 2 dicembre 1804 con il nome di Napoleone I. Il Primo Impero fu seguito dalla Restaurazione, interrotta dai cosiddetti "Cento giorni", dal 20 marzo al 22 giugno 1815, che portarono Napoleone alla sconfitta di Waterloo.
