Dal 2013 è una Città Creativa dell'UNESCO, nella categoria "Artigianato, arti e tradizioni popolari" , titolo riconosciuto soprattutto grazie alla produzione della carta a mano.
Il territorio cittadino è posto a 325 m s.l.m., in una vallata costellata da dolci colline e circondata da monti dell'Appennino umbro-marchigiano centrale e della dorsale marchigiana su cui svettano a nord-nord ovest: il monte Nebbiano , il monte Strega , il monte Catria ; ad ovest troviamo: il monte Cucco ; mentre ad est: il monte San Vicino ; infine a sud-sud ovest: il monte Nero ed il monte Maggio . Da quest'ultimo ha origine il torrente Giano che attraversa la città di Fabriano e si unisce poi al fiume Esino all'altezza della frazione di Borgo Tufico.
