L'abbazia cistercense di Santa Maria di Rivalta è un edificio religioso che appartiene al complesso monumentale di Rivalta Scrivia, frazione di Tortona, sulla riva sinistra del torrente Scrivia, nei pressi dell'incrocio di antiche strade romane , divenute nel Medioevo importanti vie di transito commerciale e di pellegrinaggio. Le origini dell'abbazia di Rivalta Scrivia risalgono al 16 gennaio 1180, quando Folco, abate dell'abbazia cistercense di Lucedio nel vercellese, promise ad Oberto, vescovo di Tortona, di facere ecclesiam de Ripaalta abbatiam del proprio ordine e di rispettare i diritti della chiesa di Tortona.
