Gli Appennini sono il sistema montuoso lungo circa 1200 km che si distende dalla zona settentrionale fino a quella meridionale dell'Italia, disegnando un arco con la parte concava a sudovest. Insieme alle Alpi, caratterizzano il rilievo e il paesaggio di gran parte del paese, interessando ben quindici regioni: quattro della sua parte continentale, tutte le regioni della Penisola nonché, secondo numerose fonti, la parte settentrionale della Sicilia. Per questi motivi sono spesso chiamati "spina dorsale della penisola italiana".
