La chiesa esisteva fin dal 1300. È attigua al monastero della Badia Grande, oggi adibito a edificio scolastico (per evitare l'oppressione del monastero dovuta alle leggi del 1866, dal 1862 si organizzarono attività scolastiche). Fu ricostruita verso la metà del XVI secolo e negli anni 1690-1697; fu restaurata nel 1737.
Il monastero fu chiuso nel 1906. Successivamente l'edificio fu utilizzato prima come caserma , poi come scuola elementare, scuola materna e scuola professionale.
Fino a pochi anni fa , ogni mercoledì sera la Santa Messa veniva celebrata in latino , accompagnata dal canto gregoriano e polifonico del coro "Jacopone da Todi". Nella chiesa si svolgono anche attività culturali particolarmente legate al canto sacro e antico. Il coro stesso utilizza solitamente la chiesa la domenica pomeriggio e il mercoledì sera.
