La Bessarabia è una regione storica compresa tra i fiumi Prut e Nistro; essa attualmente è suddivisa tra la Moldavia e l'Ucraina .
Il nome deriva dal turco-cumano/kipchaki e potrebbe essere interpretato come "regno dei padri" ; infatti tutta la Bessarabia era anticamente parte delle terre controllate dai Cumani ante i Mongoli. Etimologia simile quindi a quella della prima dinastia regnante ugro-valacca, dei Basarabidi.
