Questo museo altamente interessante racconta la storia di 200 anni di allevamento e ordine nei Paesi Bassi. Il villaggio penitenziario è nato su iniziativa di Johannes van den Bosch. Il suo obiettivo era combattere la povertà dando alle persone nelle colonie della carità una nuova opportunità. Comportamenti corretti e il massimo impegno erano importanti, e per farlo erano previste disciplina e punizioni. Cosa significasse e come si è sviluppato il progetto nel corso degli anni, è possibile vederlo qui in questa ex prigione.
Veenhuizen è stato inserito nella lista del Patrimonio dell'Umanità dell'UNESCO come parte delle colonie di beneficenza. Lo spettacolo teatrale 'Het Pauperparadijs' è stato messo in scena nel cortile del museo.
