Patate e cavalli da tiro, questa era la fama di Axel. Gli abitanti sono anche chiamati ' erpelkappers', perché perlustravano i campi alla ricerca di patate dimenticate. In molte case pende ancora un dipinto di un cavallo da tiro, o medaglie ricordano i loro cavalli campioni. Anche se la Zelanda fiamminga ha poche foreste, intorno ad Axel in questo giro c'è un bel po' di bosco. Ma naturalmente anche campi e acqua. Tantissima acqua.
