Il villaggio di Matmata si trova a circa 40 km da Gabes, un'importante città vicino alla costa. Gabes è conosciuta per la sua insolita oasi costiera. Matmata si trova a un'altitudine di 600 m. Questo luogo straordinario è famoso per le sue abitazioni troglodite. La roccia morbida in quest'area è ideale per gli scavi. Più di 700 abitazioni sono state scavate nel terreno. L'Hotel Sidi Driss a Matmata è stato il set del film di Georges Lucas: Star Wars. Questo luogo era la "casa" della famiglia Lars, la famiglia ospite di Luke Skywalker e Beru. Gli insediamenti sotterranei sono rimasti nascosti in quest'area molto ostile per secoli, e nessuno aveva conoscenza della loro esistenza fino al 1967. Il nome Matmata è quello della tribù nomade del Marocco. Si dice che abbiano fondato la città di Hamma Matmata, ora conosciuta come El Hamma.
