Insieme agli Stati del Pacifico compone gli Stati Uniti occidentali.
Il nome Stati delle Montagne Rocciose è stato utilizzato da Philip Dick nel racconto "La svastica sul sole" per una congregazione di Stati indipendente e libera, corrispondente circa all'attuale regione censuaria.
