Louvain-la-Neuve is qua urbanistisch perspectief een revolutie in België. De fietser en wandelaar staan centraal. Merkwaardig en ironisch genoeg wou men aanvankelijk de Amerikaanse architect Victor Gruen vragen om Louvain-la-Neuve te ontwerpen. Gelukkig ging dat niet door. Gruen is de geestelijke vader van de shopping mall. Maar het zal je opvallen dat de architectuur van de stad wel een merkwaardige atmosfeer uitademt. Pascal Verbeken vat het goed samen: "Toen ik hier voor het eerst kwam, leek de stad me een prefab-filmdecor, alsof er elk moment een rops truck kon langsrijden om de nepgevels opladen. De architectuur scheen een kruising tussen Bruparck en een Hollands koopstadje."
