In 2012 werd le Grand-Hornu, een van de belangrijkste mijnsites in Wallonië, opgenomen op de lijst van UNESCO werelderfgoed. 200 jaar avant-garde... vat le Grand Hornu samen. Het voormalige mijncomplex is een afspiegeling van 19de-eeuwse industrie op een uur van Brussel en is het resultaat van een echt stadsproject. Het opmerkelijke complex werd opgetrokken in neoklassieke stijl en omvat het industriële mijncomplex, de arbeiderswijk en de woningen van de bestuurders. Le Grand Hornu is erkend als uitzonderlijk erfgoed van Wallonië en neemt actief deel aan internationale beschermingsprogramma's. Het historische bezoek wordt aangevuld door tijdelijke tentoonstellingen over design, toegepaste kunsten (in de gerestaureerde zalen) en hedendaagse kunt (in het Museum dat sinds 2002 open is). Op deze plaats wordt verleden en toekomst gecombineerd.
