Hasselt is de hoofdstad en grootste centrumstad van de Belgische provincie Limburg en telt ruim 79.000 inwoners, die Hasselaren worden genoemd. Hierdoor is het qua inwonersaantal de kleinste provinciehoofdstad van Vlaanderen. De stad is de zetel van het bisdom Hasselt en ook de hoofdplaats van het kieskanton en de twee gerechtelijk kantons Hasselt. Hasselt is gelegen aan het Albertkanaal en de Demer, op de grens van Vochtig-Haspengouw en de Kempen, midden in de Grensregio Vlaanderen-Nederland.
