De naam Meetjesland verwijst naar de "meetjes": langwerpige percelen die hier zeer veelvuldig voorkomen. De oorsprong van die langwerpige percelen is gelinkt aan de ontginning van de streek aan de hand van turfwinning. Het turf werd via langwerpige stroken afgegraven.
Een meer pittig etymoligish verhaal vertelt dat de naam "Meetjesland" afkomstig is van keizer Karel (Karel V). Hij zou gezegd hebben dat het hier vol "oude meetjes" zat, verwijzend naar de oude vrouwen. Uit angst voor de onverzadigbare seksuele appetijt zouden de families hun dochters binnengehouden hebben
