In de lente van 1909 trok Permeke weer naar Latem, bij de Latemse vrienden, maar hij leefde er eerder teruggetrokken en interesseerde zich vooral voor de zware en pasteuse toets van Albert Servaes, die hij al eerder kende van zijn Gentse academietijd; zij wisselden veel uit, werden vrienden en schilderden samen op het platteland in en rond Latem. Servaes kon overigens toen al doorgaan als de "Vader van het Vlaamse expressionisme".
