Gistel is vooral bekend door zijn Flandriens: voormalig wielrenner Johan Museeuw, winnaar van onder andere de Ronde van Vlaanderen, en Sylvère Maes, winnaar van onder andere de Ronde van Frankrijk in 1936 and 1939.
Belangrijk evenement is de jaarlijkse St.-Godelieveprocessie, rond de Heilige Godelieve van Gistel. Het ter Hare ere opgerichte slotklooster, Abdij Ten Putte, is één van de bekendste West-Vlaamse bedevaartsoorden.
