Het gehucht Brandhoek ligt tijdens de oorlog voor een groot deel buiten het bereik van de Duitse artillerie. Er zijn dan ook kampementen, opslagplaatsen en medische posten ('Field Ambulances') aanwezig. De begraafplaats 'Brandhoek Military Cemetery' start in mei 1915. Tijdens de derde slag bij Ieper in 1917 komen er nog twee begraafplaatsen bij.
Het graf met de meeste bloemen en/of kruisjes is dat van Captain Noël Godfrey Chavasse. Hij ontvangt tweemaal het 'Victoria Cross'. Slechts 3 andere militairen valt dezelfde eer te beurt. Hij is de zoon van de bisschop van Liverpool en ‘medical'. Zijn eerste 'Victoria Cross' verdient hij aan de Somme in 1916. Hij redt enkele gewonden die op een 25-tal meter van de Duitse linie liggen. Het tweede krijgt hij postuum, omdat hij in augustus 1917 andere soldaten bij het Wieltje in Ieper blijft verzorgen, hoewel hijzelf is verwond. Een paar dagen later ontploft een granaat bij de hulppost. Chavasse wordt zwaar gewond overgebracht naar het veldhospitaal in Brandhoek. Hij overlijdt er op 4 augustus 1917.
