Wie het Wonderwoud vanuit de lucht bekijkt, zal meteen zien dat het gebied de vorm heeft van een X. Die heeft alles te maken met de geschiedenis van die plek: in de jaren zestig waren er plannen om daar het ‘vliegveld van Lochristi’ te bouwen. Dat kwam er uiteindelijk nooit, maar de grond voor de landingsbanen was wel vrijgemaakt. De jaren daarna werd het terrein op veel plekken uitgegraven en weer opgevuld voor de zandontginning, maar voortaan krijgt de natuur er dus opnieuw alle ruimte.
