Na de val van Jeruzalem in 1291 trokken de Tempeliers zich terug naar hun vesting in Acco, aan de kust van het huidige Israël. Ook dit bolwerk moest aan de aanvallen van de Saracenen geloven, waarop de Tempeliers hun nieuwe hoofdkwartier op Cyrpus vestigden. De doestelling om de Heilige stad Jeruzalem te beschermen verviel aldus en de Tempeliers begonnen zich meer te focussen op het commerciële aspect binnen Europa en Oost-Europa.
