Salzwedel is een gemeente in de Duitse deelstaat Saksen-Anhalt. Het is de Kreisstadt van de Landkreis Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. De gemeente telt 23.655 inwoners. Op 1 april 2008 kreeg de stad de naamstoevoeging Hansestadt.
De geschiedenis van de protestantse Mariakerk, de grootste kerk in Salzwedel, gaat terug tot ongeveer 1350. De kerk heeft een romaanse oorsprong, maar vertegenwoordigt vooral de stijl van de baksteengotiek.
