In Gangelt leefde Hubertus de Cremer, beter bekend als de vader van de cartograaf Gerard Mercator. Hier oefende Hubertus Cremer het beroep van schoenmaker uit. In 1512 kwam hij met zijn hoogzwangere vrouw die zwanger was van Gerardus naar Rupelmonde waar hij geboren werd als 7de kind van de familie.
