Op 12 september 1944 overschreden de eerste Amerikaanse militairen de Duitse grens in de buurt van het dorp Roetgen, net buiten Aken. Een aantal eenheden drong door tot het Huertgenwald om de rechterflank van de aanval te dekken. Omdat ze de taaiheid van Duitse verdediging en de onherbergzaamheid van het landschap onderschatten, leden de Amerikanen zware verliezen in een confrontatie die bekend is geworden als 'De Slag om (het dorp) Schmidt'.
