Napoleon nam het initiatief om hier op Cap Gris Nez een optische telegraaf op te zetten zodat berichten tussen Engeland en Frankrijk konden doorgeseind worden. Deze optische telegraaf of semafoor geeft 'informatie door' door middel van visuele vormen of signalen met bijvoorbeeld rolluiken of balken geplaatst in een bepaalde vorm. De eerste semafoor werd geïnstalleerd op de Kaap in 1805.
