Sondernach, met 663 inwoners, ontleent zijn naam aan de zuidelijke beek in de vallei. Het werd in de 12e eeuw gesticht door de benedictijner monniken van de abdij Saint-Grégoire en werd na 1789 onafhankelijk. Het dorp werd verwoest tijdens de Slag om Metzeral in 1915 en heeft nu herdenkingskerken en een breed aanbod aan toeristische activiteiten.
