Aix-en-Provence is een Franse en Occitaanse stad die zich bevindt in het departement Bouches-du-Rhône en in de regio Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. De inwoners worden sextians genoemd in het Occitaans en Aixois in het Frans.
Het was een oude Gallische nederzetting, die werd veroverd door de Romeinse proconsul Gaius Sextius Calvus, die het Aquae Sextiae noemde. Marius versloeg daar de Teutonen. Het werd aangevallen door de Visigoten, de Franken, de Lombarden en de moslims. Het was een aartsbisdom.
