Gebouwd in de 17e eeuw, werd het in de 19e eeuw verbouwd op de plaats van een oud gebouw uit de 12e eeuw, een Romaanse kerk. Van deze oude kerk resteert het romaanse portaal, dat werd herbouwd en geplaatst bij de ingang van het priesterkoor
Wat het huidige gebouw betreft, het was in de 17e eeuw dat de monniken besloten een nieuwe kerk te bouwen. De werkzaamheden begonnen in 1681 en duurden 15 jaar.
De kerk is tijdens de Vendée-oorlog afgebrand, net als de rest van de stad.
De oorspronkelijke deuren in de kerk vertonen tekenen van inbraak tijdens de in 1906 met geweld uitgevoerde inventarisatie ten tijde van de scheiding van kerk en staat.
